Tosta Mista at Bakers of All Nations

A popular Portuguese snack great any time of day.

There’s a Facebook page for Tosta mista, proclaiming that this panini-like sandwich is a symbol of Portugal, “simple and loved by everyone!”

The Dish: Tosta mista

What’s Inside: Tosta mista consists of two slices of bread, a slice of cheese and a slice of ham. The bread is lightly buttered on the outside and toasted like panini. Tosta mista at is made with soft rolls or sliced white bread, both baked on the premises, as is everything in the café. The cheese is an Edam-like Portuguese cow’s milk cheese, called flamengo.

How’s It Taste: I had my first tosta mista at Bakers of All Nation and can understand why this dish is so popular in Portugal where it consumed at all times of day. The bread is crisp on the outside but not hard. The cheese is melted just enough to make it oozy and the mild cheese blends well with the ham.

Sides: Paula Rego, co-owner of Bakers of All Nations, says that cappuccino is the right beverage to have with this. My snack was completed with pastel de nata, a creamy custard in a puff pastry tart.
