American Red Cross Holds Annual Safety Fun Day

Local youths learn disaster preparedness, first aid and fire prevention at annual event.

Last Friday the   held their annual kids’ safety day in Mineola, inviting children from the area to participate in an afternoon of learning.

The two-and-a-half hour event was run by Youth Coordinator, Saleha Awal and focused on the themes of disaster preparedness, fire prevention and first aid.

“We wanted to choose important topics but we also wanted the kids to be actively engaged,” Awal said. “We have games and contests like a scavenger hunt, hurricane hulu-hoops, water safety twister and face painting. We also have a bake sale and our staff will perform a variety of skits at the end.”

This is one of the Red Cross's two major events during the month with a car-wash being held on July 16 which helped raise money with games and prizes.

"A lot of the money raised went straight to the Long Island Red Cross," Awal said.
