Best Places to Watch Jets vs. Steelers in Mineola Sunday

A roundup of promotions at local pubs for Sunday's AFC Championship game.

The Jets are going to the AFC championship! Fresh off their a resounding 28-21 victory over the New England Patriots last Sunday, the Gang Green marches off to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers in this Sunday’s game which will decide who goes on to the Super Bowl. Coach Rex Ryan, quarterback Mark Sanchez and the rest will face Ben Roethlisberger, who has two Super Bowl rings to his name, and the formidable Black and Golden defense.

There is excitement in the air as the Jets get another chance to  improve their post season record of 4-1. Jet fans are in a frenzy preparing for this Sunday’s game as are the local bars and pubs. Mineola's fine establishments will be catering to the multitudes of hungry and thirsty football fans coming to watch the game.

Mineola’s oldest Irish pub is having $3 domestic bottles and happy hour prices on all cocktails. They’ll be serving free wings, hot and cold food, and Bobbo's Beef Brisket sliders with homemade slaw and potato salad.

Murphy’s has the distinction of being one of the only bars in Mineola that is also in the Town of Hempstead. They are offering $3 Budweiser, Miller, and Hanley’s Ale and 25 cent wings (cajun, honey chipotle, teriyaki, bbq) during the game. 

The world famous St. James was established in 1985 and is one of Mineola’s longest running establishments. Legend has it that it is also the birthplace of Long Island Ice Tea. The St. James has 17 televisions simultaneously playing every game on Sunday. Here is a sampling of their NFL menu:

  • $3.00 16 oz. Miller Lite stadium beers 
  • Three sliders for $5.95 
  • The 2 point conversion: two sliders and six buffalo wings for $7.95 

The Cornerstone is a neighborhood favorite and has been popular with Chaminade and Mineola Alumni for decades. This is a true sports bar. They have the NFL network playing on 15 televisions, two pool tables, two dart boards, arcade games like Big Buck Hunter and Golden Tee. For the game they’ll be serving a combo bar pie and 12 wings for $10.95. The bar will also be making wings to go the day of the game.

The venerable sports café offers patrons looking for something other than the usual bar food fare for the game on Sunday. They will be serving a free buffet of Portuguese and Brazilian favorites throughout the game. You can wash down the grub with Sangres Beer from Portugal or buy three domestic beers and get one free. Don’t be surprised if you see  Fútbol (the other football) being played on one of their five televisions.

Eleanor Rigby’s is a place where “a splendid time is guaranteed for all.” The spacious bar can accommodate a large crowd. For the championships, they are offering $3 Budweiser beers, $3.50 pints, 25 cent Buffalo wings, complimentary appetizers at halftime, and free “Rigby” shots for every New York touchdown.

Céad Míle Fáilte means “one hundred thousand welcomes” and the Recovery Room certainly lives up to its mantra. It’s conveniently located on the west bound side of the . It is doing t-shirt and hat giveaways, $3 all domestics (bottle and draft) $4 imports, $3 vodka cocktails, complimentary hot/cold buffet with its decadent “hot hot” wings, and free shots for every NY Jet touchdown.  The “Reco” Room will also be holding a pre-game rally on Saturday.  Everyone is encouraged to come in their full on Jets regalia.
