Brownie Scout Troop 1831 Holds Food Drive for Sandy Relief

Mineola girl scouts collect over 700 pounds of food in two hours.

Brownie Girl Scout Troop 1831, based out of the Jackson Avenue School, recently, hosted a Hurricane Sandy Relief Food Drive at King Kullen of Mineola, on November 10.

These girls collected 700 pounds of food and water in only two hours and donated it to Island Harvest, a food bank for Long Island.

The troop originally planned to do a regular food drive, but with the timing of the hurricane, was able to collect much more than they could ever have expected.

There were some very generous shoppers, handing over bags full of groceries and there were also some who said they were in “disaster” mode themselves and just couldn’t give at this time.

They scouts enjoyed themselves and even as 8 year olds, they could still do something to help out.

The girls plan to use this experience towards earning their “Celebrating Community” badge and hope this will encourage other girl scout and boy scout troops to do a food drive as well as food is one thing that people never stop needing.
