Carding Kids at the Mineola Library

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month.

September is nationally recognized by the American Library Association as ‘Library Card Sign-Up Month’ to encourage people without a library card to sign up. With the new school year in session, the is hosting its annual and offering an incentive to kids: sign up for their first library card and receive a gift bag packed with goodies that includes a library cardholder, pencil and bookmark.

With a library card, children have access to all of the resources inside the children’s room, including being able to check out books, audiobooks and DVDs.

With three children at home, Mineola resident Lisa Frey visits the library often and stresses the importance of signing your children up at a young age.

“My middle son got his first library card when he was four, pretty much when he was able to write his name," she said, adding that “with a library card they are able to check out books for free, instead of going to a store and buying them.”

It is children’s librarian Margaret Ann Castrigno’s hope that kids will take advantage of the resources and begin to appreciate reading sooner rather than later.
