Checking in on Some All-Star Seniors

Winthrop doctor helps oversee all-star senior softball game.

There are old-timers games and then there are Old Timers Games.

While the likes of Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford don’t don their gloves and play at Yankee Stadium anymore during the annual festivities in the Bronx, a group of seniors from the Bristal Assisted Living community recently decided to hold their own ballgame – a doubleheader no less – under the supervision of ’s Dr. Scott Schubach, who is the Chairman of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

The “Cardio vs Ortho” all star game features players over the age of 70 who underwent heart related surgeries against those whose lives were improved following orthopedic operations such as knee or hip replacements.

The “Orthos” ended up defeating the “Cardios” 9-7.

The All Stars who compete in the Long Island Senior Softball Association (LISSA) also happen to play two doubleheaders a week.
