Crafting Sand Art Creations

Children participate in frame craft at Mineola Library, recalling fun days of summer.

Beach days may be long gone but last week at the , children got another chance to get crafty with sand.

Numerous colorless picture frames were stacked on a cart next to jars filled with colored sand in the lower-level community room. Alongside the long table children from age of two-and-a-half to kindergarten waited patiently to begin the project.

With nearly a dozen colors of sand to choose from each of the children were able to design their frame any way they wanted; the tricky part was sharing the sands and avoiding a few spills.

Many of the children were already thinking of what picture they wanted to place in the frame, with 4 year old Brianna Gabrielli saying “I’m putting it in my room. I want to put a picture of me and my sister in it.”

Andrew Pullicino said he was going to give it to someone as a present.

This project was only one of the many activities that children’s librarian Meredith Minkoff has planned for the new school year, organizing the project specifically for the younger children to “socialize while exploring creativity.”

Minkoff explained that children who come to the library for a program will hopefully be curious about the books and other activities they can take part in.

“Sand is a symbol of the summer and since everyone takes pictures this can be a way for everyone to remember the fun memories,” she said.
