Eagle Scout Project Raises Almost a Ton of Food

Scout Joseph Cannella gathers food and funds for Interfaith Nutrition Network.

With the help of fellow scouts from Boy Scout Troop 776 in Massapequa, Life Scout Joseph Cannella recently completed his Eagle Scout Project to help fight hunger on Long Island. A growing problem on Long Island, an estimated 110,000 children facing hunger each day.

The primary goal of Joseph’s project was to raise awareness of hunger in the community as well as raising funds and non-perishables for The Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) in Hempstead.

The INN operates 19 soup kitchens throughout Long Island that feed over 8,000 individuals each week and provide emergency shelter for those in need.

Cannella’s project took place over several months. He set up canned food collection sites at three local elementary schools: Birch Lane, Fairfield and Lockhart.

Students and faculty at the schools responded with great generosity. The son of a Court Officer Sergeant in the Mineola , Cannella and his troop also collected nonperishable food outside the Walbaums and King Kullen stores in Massapequa.

Canella also raised funds by soliciting sponsors for his participation in the “Walk INN” annual fundraiser at Hofstra University.

In total Joseph and his Troop raised $1,465 and collected nearly two thousand pounds of nonperishable food items for the INN.
