Harvest Celebration Weekend at Hicks Nurseries

Hicks Nurseries is offering fun activities for families and children, at their Harvest Celebration Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2.

The weekend is packed with activities that include Otto’s Hay Ride and real live farm animals to visit plus home-made candy apples, fresh cider and roasted corn.

Otto the Ghost’s New Friend: The immensely popular Otto the Ghost appears in this free animated story in which Otto goes to the museum and makes an interesting new friend. Visitors are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Long Island Cares to benefit hungry people on Long Island.

Fudge tasting: Maria Vigliotti, Hicks Nurseries’ fudgemaster, demonstrates how she makes Hicks’ famous fudge, providing free samples of several popular flavors, on Saturday, October 1, from 11 am to noon.

Fall Holiday Decorating Seminar--Decorating Your Front Entrance for the Season. Attendees learn how to create a festive, inviting seasonal entrance display for their home on Saturday, October 1 from 2 to 3 pm. Free.

9th Annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Long Island giant pumpkin growers will compete to see who has grown the biggest pumpkin. Winners in previous years have weighed 622, 876, 920 and 1070 pounds. Sunday, October 2 at 11 am. Free.

Meet the Author: Fun Family: 1100 Things To Do with Your Kids on Long Island & Beyond: Linda Reid Bryce, author of the new book Fun Family: 1,100 Things to Do with Your Kids on Long Island & Beyond, tells about the wealth of family activities that you can enjoy all year ’round. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. October 1 and 2 from 11 am to 4 pm.

Apple tasting: Throughout the weekend, from 9 am to 5 pm, visitors can taste free samples of the many of varieties of New York State apples—sweet, tart, crisp--that the nursery has for sale.
