Holiday Offerings Abound in Area

Numerous opportunities to give or receive on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Day in Nassau and the Town of North Hempstead will be filled with opportunities for residents to both give and receive in the spirit of the holiday season which kicks off this week.

In Port Washington, many local organizations think of families in need. 

Since 1990, for example, the the Police Benevolent Association in Port Washington distributed all of the ingredients to make a complete Thanksgiving dinners to 20 families. They received everything from the turkey to sweet potatoes, corn, string beans and rolls, along with apple pie and pumpkin pie and cookies, said Detective Anthony Guzzello.  The PBA, which works with local organizations to determine which families need support, delivers the ingredients so families can prepare meals to their liking and tradition, and enjoy the festivities of preparing Thanksgiving meal with their families. 

In Nassau, free Thanksgiving meals will be offered at The North Shore Inn in Glen Cove, 12 Continental Place from 12-1 p.m.; the First Baptist Church in Westbury, 212 Rev. Stanley Hines Dr., according to Newsday.

The Rotary Club of Great Neck distributes more than 1,000 Thanksgiving boxes to the local community each year. Each box contains a frozen turkey, fresh potatoes, fresh carrots, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce etc. The box contains enough food to feed a family of six. 

Residents may purchase a Thanksgiving dinner offered by the Great Neck Synagogue for a Arrandale Senior Housing resident. A donation of $18 buys a Thanksgiving dinner for a resident of the Arrandale Senior Housing resident. Gifts may be donated in honor or in memory of someone special. Volunteers are also being recruited to help serve the dinner or to perform in a talent show at Arrandale House Nov. 22 from 11:30-2 pm. Bee-Organic, located at 4 Bond St., of Great Neck will be open on Thanksgiving Day serving a special organic Thanksgiving dinner. Diners will have the option of feasting on several different courses, consisting of a fish and another seasonal vegetarian dish, appetizers, soups, salads and desserts.
