Kids Craft Winter Fashions at Mineola Library

With no sewing involved, children crafted fashionable scarves to make as gifts.

When asked to conjure up some creative ideas for the ’s Children’s Room, head librarian Meredith Minkoff knew just where to turn.

“I immediately went to Oriental Trading and began to search for ideas,” she said. An arts and crafts store, Minkoff said “they can really help someone come up with creative ideas for kids.”

Minkoff and other librarians put together a variety of events for children of all ages to enjoy, ranging from pet shows to museum visits. While most events and projects are typically free, for some crafts there is a low fee of a few dollars to cover materials.

The first craft project of the new year was creating a scarf for the winter weather. Minkoff discovered the idea when sifting through winter themed events, settling on one where children gather to decorate blue, snowflake covered scarves and calling it the “No Sew Snowflake Scarf Craft.”

Learning to create different knots and exercising their fine motor skills Wednesday afternoon, the children took various ribbons and connected them to different parts of the scarf. Since all the craft idea packages from Oriental Trading come pre-packaged, there was a wide array of accessories for the children to choose from.

With the craft space being occupied mostly by young girls, talk of wearing the new scarves to school and showing them off for their friends filled the air.

However, one of the three young boys in attendance decided that his scarf would serve a greater purpose: he would make the scarf for his grandmother, “so that her neck wouldn’t get cold and she won’t get sick.”
