The Mineola Chamber of Commerce selected its annual recipients of the Jerry Mehlman Scholarship Award during its final meeting of the season at Piccola Bussola Tuesday night.
Originally dubbed the Mineola Chamber of Commerce scholarships, the award was in honor of Jerry Mehlman, one of the founders of the Mineola Chamber, who passed away last year at the age of 86. The awards are given annually to one graduating senior each from and .
This year’s recipients are Wendy Espinosa of Mineola High School and Joseph Johnson.
“They’re two wonderful kids who I hope other kids emulate,” Bill Greene said at his first official meeting as the new chamber president, taking over from Ray Sikorski.

During her time at Mineola High, Espinosa has visited nursing homes and worked with the Ronald McDonald House, The Dinner Project, her school’s student service leadership council, and the .
Johnson, a Levittown resident, was a part of the Chaminade Speech and Debate Club, helped in all Mineola fairs over the past 4 years, was a founding member of the Columbian Squire Circle (the youth branch of the ) and became an Eagle Scout.
