Mineola Library Recovering from Weekend Water Damage
All programs expected to resume normal schedule by Thursday.
In the wake of this past weekend’s rainstorm that caused severe local flooding around Mineola and across Long Island, the had to cancel events that were scheduled for Monday and Tuesday due to .
The full day of rain on Sunday was the first incident of reported damage to the library after the series of since the beginning of August.
“There was no damage at the library from the August 1 storm and no events were cancelled because of it,” Library Director Charles Sleefe said in an e-mail.

There had been speculation that previous storms caused damage to artifacts and artwork housed at the library, but Sleefe claims these are also rumors and untrue.
Sleefe said the decision to cancel the programs was due to the excess water that collected in neighboring Memorial Park, dampening carpets in the space and ultimately caused an odor in the room.

The library is somewhat built into a slope on Marcellus Road, allowing rain water to run west down the incline and into the park.
According to the director, any insurance claims needed for the library is covered under the village’s policy and nothing had to be replaced during this incident.
The cancelled will not be rescheduled since there is not enough time to fit it into the full calendar.
All other programs will resume this evening, starting with the and will continue to run on their published schedule.
