Mineola Memorial Park Gets New Tree for Arbor Day 2013

Sapling replaces one lost to storm damage that was memorial to Army Specialist Thomas Motto.

Members of the Mineola Village Board officially observed Arbor Day on Friday morning at Memorial Park by holding an annual tree planting ceremony.

This year’s tree planting was held near the Mineola 9-11 Memorial and was placed in a location where a previous tree had grown but was lost due to storm damage. The tree is a memorial to U.S. Army Specialist Thomas Motto, a Bronze Star recipient killed in action in Vietnam.

Mineola has received “Tree City USA” recognition by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the past 28 consecutive years for its continuing efforts at planting trees. The village will also be replacing all of its trees that were damaged, destroyed or uprooted after Hurricane Sandy and the ensuing Nor’Easter.

In the 2013-14 budget the village board had doubled the amount of funds dedicated to its tree-planting line this year as part of its annual tree planting effort to help replace trees lost last year due to the storms.
