Mineola Resident Honored on 106th Birthday

Former Mineola High School teacher Beatrice Hubbard honored by local officials.

Mineola resident Beatrice Hubbard recently received a trio of visitors to her door on Friday, Dec. 14 as New York State Sen. Jack Martins, Village of Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss and “Mr. Mineola” John Davanzo stopped by her apartment on Mineola Boulevard to wish her a happy 106th birthday.

Hubbard was born on Dec. 14, 1906, the same year the Village of Mineola was incorporated. In 2006, as part of the village’s centennial celebration, Martins, then-mayor of Mineola, named Ms. Hubbard the grand marshal for the village’s 100th anniversary parade.

Davanzo, who was one of Hubbard’s students dating back to the original Mineola High School, frequently pays visits to his former teacher.

Sen. Martins and mayor Strauss both wished to visit with Davanzo to wish Hubbard a happy birthday and pay tribute to a resident who has lived through two world wars, the Great Depression and numerous other trials that have faced the country.

Through it all she continues to relish in the small things in life – like a visit from a good friend.
