Nassau County Bar Association Names 2013 Employee of the Year

Thirty year employee Phil Costa named 2013 court employee of the year.

Phil Costa of Garden City has been chosen as the 2013 recipient of the Nassau County Bar Association’s Peter T. Affatato Court Employee of the Year Award.  The award is presented each year by the Nassau County Bar Association to a court employee who represents the finest traditions of the court system and encourages the highest ethics and ideals of the legal community.

The award is named in honor of Peter T. Affatato, Esq., past-President of the Nassau County Bar Association.

“Phil Costa is a very worthy recipient of this wonderful Nassau County Bar Association award named in honor of Peter Affatato,” Nassau Administrative Judge Thomas A. Adams said in a statement. “Like Peter Affatato, Phil is a dedicated and conscientious professional who through actions and deeds has consistently maintained the high standards of our system of Justice. Phil's professional demeanor and comprehensive knowledge of civil practice law and rules is, in part, responsible for the Nassau County Supreme Court's extraordinary reputation throughout the state.”

Costa has served the Unified Court System for 30 years. He began his career as a New York State Court Officer in the Queens Family and Supreme Courts. He was promoted to Senior Court Clerk in 1991 and transferred to Nassau Supreme Court in 1993. He was promoted to management analyst in 1999 and selected as the point person for the development of Nassau’s Case Management System. Mr. Costa attended extensive training workshops including the Justice Management Institute in Denver, CO and the New York State Judicial Institute at Pace University.

In 2003 Costa was promoted to court clerk specialist and currently supervises the main clerk’s office in supreme court which encompasses case management and trial operations, civil case intake, motions and judgments department, calendar control part, alternative dispute resolution part, foreclosure settlement part, preparation of statistical reporting and assisting with court initiative planning and periodically meets with different NCBA committees in order to consider input from attorneys on new court procedures.

Phil Costa lives in Garden City with his wife Bonnie, who is a Senior Court Reporter in Supreme Court and daughters Cari, who attends Adelphi University, and Brittany, who attends Garden City High School.
