Parents Help Kids Construct Winter Penguin Hats at Mineola Library

Families work together to create a "fleece penguin hat" with their children.

Young children and parents came together Thursday afternoon to participate in a “fleece penguin hat” craft project at the . A total of 10 children attended the event along with their parents as part of the library’s ongoing children’s programming calendar

“This was one of the cutest crafts I’ve done,” Children's Librarian and Programming Coordinator Meredith Minkoff said.

Parents assisted their child in assembling the penguin hat, with all of the children eager to finish so that they could try out their project. The library supplied all of the materials, including glue, scissors and the pre-packaged craft.

Geared towards children age two and a half through kindergarten, each participant was given a prepackaged kit from Oriental Trading containing a black knit hat, a set of felt pieces, including button “eyes,” a nose and mouth.

Working hard to assemble their creations, the children enjoyed the process of gluing the new penguin hat together.

Andrew Shatz, a student at , was accompanied by his father, Steve, and both were thrilled to be constructing this craft. Andrew was excited to wear his new hat because, as he said, “I like it.”

Jessica Bertolini brought her daughter Gieiana to this event because she “loves the programs here.” Gieiana said that she “likes penguins” and enjoyed this craft because of the button eyes on the hat.

“I try and keep her busy and they are really nice here- they always call me when they have openings,” Bertonlini said.

Fellow Willis Avenue School student Rahul Setia was excited to have a new penguin hat to wear. “We come to the library everyday,” his mother, Karishma said.

As the young kids began to finish the project, they quickly moved their new hats from the tables on to their heads- ready to brave the chilly temperatures outside. “This was one of the cutest crafts I’ve done,” Minkoff said.
