Patch Picks: Cinco de Mayo Festivities

A roundup of places in Mineola celebrating Mexico's unlikely victory over the French.

When translated, Cinco de Mayo means in English, the fifth of May. For many people it’s a day of celebration with food, close friends and family. Often incorrectly thought to be Mexicos independence day – September 16 – Cinco de Mayo is a holiday born out of the American Civil War to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Here are some of the festivities going on around Mineola to celebrate the Fifth of May:

After obtaining their liquor license, owner Carlos Meza says they are ready to fiesta. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Vinoco will be kicking off the party during Happy Hour beginning at 3 p.m. The themed food of the night will be Mexican. There will be traditional Mexican food, quesadillas and fajitas, served with Mexican spirits as well as Vinoco’s unique “shooters,” a variety of dipping sauces served in a shot glass, with of course, flavors of Mexico.
