Patch Picks: Gearing Up for Football Season

Enjoying the high school football season in comfort.

Saying “so long” to summer can be tough for and students, but it can quickly be forgotten when football season starts. For diehard fans of the Mustangs and Flyers, the football season kicked off last week and excitement is in the air.

It is important to be prepared to gear up and cheer for your team regardless of whether it is a home or away game.

The players have their roles: running the plays and going for the win; but as a loyal fan, it’s your responsibility to give them the encouragement to liven up the field. Right now the weather is still warm but in the coming months, teams look to the bleachers for fan support. If you are not in it to win it then think twice before going! Take time before the game to get creative by making signs and posters. Use team colors to stand out and root them on.

Apparel

At a game, stand out in the stands. Coordinate your outfit by wearing team colors. Flyers fans- dress in crimson and gold and for the Mustangs put on your red and white attire. Some teams design customized apparel for their players but maybe it is time to take initiative and put together an order for fan gear – check for items with your respective school store!

Comfort

The players have an advantage to stay warm at the games by running the field. As for fans it is up to you to brainstorm ways to stay warm and comfortable. Temperatures will start to drop as we get further into the football season. Go prepared and pack a sweatshirt, an umbrella and maybe even a portable chair or blanket if there’s no extra seats. Fans have gotten fancy and bring hand and foot warmers and some even arrive with stadium seat cushions to keep their behinds warm (folding a blanket into a square to sit on will also make do in a pinch!).

Food

There is nothing like indulging on “game food” at a sporting event. Bringing your own goodies to the game depends on if it’s home or away. If you have time before the game, coordinate a quick bite to eat locally with a group of friends or take turns bringing chips and other easy foods to snack on. It’s always a good idea to organize and plan ahead of time.

Coverage

If you’re not in the mood to go out, have a test the next day or any other reason why you can’t be at the game, find a reliable source to fill you in with the statistics, photos and most important, the score. For the upcoming season Mineola Patch has staff on hand ready to post, tweet and publish scores and schedules to make you feel like you were there.

Let the games begin!
