Patch Picks: Memorial Day 2011 Activities

Here are five ways to recognize the veterans who lost their lives in the line of duty to our country.

For many of the residents of Mineola, Memorial Day is a holiday weekend that symbolizes the official start to summer. However, the last Monday in May was originally intended to honor and recognize our veterans who put forth their lives for our country.

As we commemorate Memorial Day 2011, here are the local observances occurring this weekend.

Village of Mineola Memorial Day Parade

Come together and celebrate with neighbors and nearby residents on Memorial Day. The  will be hosting this year’s Memorial Day Parade in remembrance of veterans who are no longer with us.

  • When: Monday, May 30 at 11 a.m.

The Town of North Hempstead will be holding its annual Memorial Day Weekend tribute and fireworks display at Bar Beach to commemorate those who died serving for our country. The beach will open at 3 p.m. followed by a Memorial Day Service from 6:30 to 7 p.m. to recognize our fallen soldiers. 

There will be live performances by Billy Joel and Elton John tribute bands.

  • When: May 28 at 6 p.m. and fireworks will begin at sundown
  • Where: North Hempstead’s Bar Beach (West Shore Road in Port Washington)
  • Note: Cars will be charged $5 to park



On Saturday morning the Annual New Hyde Park Memorial Day Parade will be held to remember the veterans who fought for our country. They will be heading to New Hyde Park Memorial Park where wreaths will be laid in honor of veterans lost in the line of duty.

  • When: Saturday, May 28 at 10 a.m.
  • Lineup: Hillside Boulevard



The annual air show began in 2004 and since then it has been a Memorial Day weekend highlight for many Long Islander’s. In past years more than 200,000 people have flocked to see the show throughout the weekend. This year it will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29 and begin at 10 a.m. There will be many civilian and military jets performing as well as “static displays” for people to visit.

  • Where: Jones Beach State Park
  • Hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Parking: $10/car

Williston Park Memorial Day Parade

The Village of Williston Park will be having a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. There will be a ceremony at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Hall on Willis Avenue followed by a parade at 9:30 a.m. Marchers will travel throughout the village and stop at the Village Hall and the Fire House to remember those veterans and firemen who are no longer with us.

  • When: Monday, May 30
  • Lineup: American Legion Hall on Willis Avenue at 9 a.m.
