Patch Picks: Places To Let Your “Dog Run”

Here are a few fun dog-friendly suggestions for you and your furry friend.

Dog lovers can attest that it’s not fair when only the humans have fun; true dog lovers get the most enjoyment when their dogs are outside getting exercise and can frolic freely. If your dog has manners, can listen and play well with others, take your pooch somewhere they can romp – but be sure he does not go too far!

Last year, Dogfriendly.com declared San Diego as the top “dog-friendly” city in the United States. Although New York trailed behind, Nassau County has made an effort to provide special areas for dogs to run. Since 2000, dog runs have been in high demand both for people and for their pets. Today, there are six locations in Nassau and five in Suffolk for our furry friends to have fun.

In this special edition of Patch Picks, here are a few suggestions of places to bring your dog for some exercise and summer fun. So grab a leash, plenty of water, a favorite toy and be sure not to forget a pickup bag!

Christopher Morley Park

Located centrally between Mineola, New Hyde Park and Port Washington, the dog run at Christopher Morley Park provides local residents an enclosed area for well-mannered dogs to socialize. Large and small dogs have one area to play. The run is busy throughout the year. When the weather is nice, you can count on a big turnout at the run and even in the winter loyal dog owners beat the bite of the chilling cold for their dogs to have fun.

  • Hours: Sunrise to dusk
  • Note: Located on the North side of the parking lot.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration

This is one of the newer properties that are now shared with dogs. Unique to this run is the two separate areas designated for large and small dogs based on weight. Bring your own toys and bags but the village provides water for your pooches from a green rainwater collection system.

  • Hours: Mon.- Fri. 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Sat., 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Sun., 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Note: The dog run is located near the entrance to the property.

Featuring tennis courts, playing fields, slides, swings and a gazebo for kids, there is also a paved walkway that is perfect for a stroll in the park with your dog. As long as your four-legged friend is not a nuisance share the beauty together while getting exercise.

Nickerson Beach Park

Some people are willing to travel a few extra miles if it means taking the leash off your dog to run free. At Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach there is a separate area for big and small dogs and plenty of shade to take a breather.

  • Note: The dog run is located across the parking lot from the Fun Zone. During the summer months parking fees may apply.

Around the block

When you have exhausted all options or you have limited time, your pooch still appreciates the simple stroll around the neighborhood. If you are feeling energetic, challenge him to a jog or just walk at your own pace. Keep in mind the early mornings and late evenings are not as taxing on your dog.
