Claire Millman, a Plainview resident, has been named Nassau County’s 2014 Senior Woman of the Year, officials said.
Millman was presented an award at the 40th Annual May Luncheon/Conference in Observance of Older Americans Month on May 20. According to Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and County Clerk Maureen O’Connell, Millman represented the county in Albany at the 2014 Senior Citizens Day Celebration and Awards Ceremony on May 6.
Millman is a Phi-Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College. A Plainview resident for over 54 years, Millman continues to call this community home where she resides with her husband, Stan, of 59 years. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.
Millman has been a smoke-free environment activist for 40 years and has fought tirelessly to achieve smoke-free air in all public places and workplaces by educating officials and the public about the hazards of active and passive smoking, and establishing laws for the health protection of all.
Her efforts have been successful, and she has earned many awards including Woman of Distinction 2003, Town of Oyster Bay; and Honoree, N.Y. State Council of the Aging 2001. She recently received Lifetime Achievement Awards from Brooklyn College and the Association of Generational Experts for Seniors. She was featured in Newsday’s Act 2 cover story, Pioneer Smoke Free Environment Activist, on March 29th.
Millman is also an officer and performer of New York Senior America. In 1995, she was a pageant finalist and has been on the board of directors since 1998. She was the president for six years and is the communications director and co-producer of the website. She performs at nursing homes, veteran’s hospitals, senior groups, and patriotic events. Her greatest rewards are bringing joy to the disabled and being called an inspiration by young and senior audiences. She motivates seniors to be active and to try something new at any age.
Millman clearly celebrates life everyday by her positive philosophy of life. She values every day and has a passion and joy for everything she does. She is truly an inspiration.
