Student Essay Contest Winners Honored by County

Student from Williston Park among winners of 2012 New York Humane Society Essay Contest.

Students from Williston Park, Floral Park, Seaford, Rockville Centre, Syosset and East Rockaway were recently honored by Nassau Executive Ed Mangano as student winners of the 2012 New York Humane Society Essay Contest.

The winners included: third graders grader Carly Kane of the Rhame Avenue School in East Rockaway and Eushin Vitale of Our Lady Of Victory School in Floral Park; fourth grader Sofia Berger of St. Aidan School in Williston Park; fifth graders Matthew Laraia of Maria Regina School in Seaford and Mary Kate Sullivan of St. Agnes School in Rockville Centre; and Alexis Gendler of St. Edward the Confessor School in Syosset. 

This year’s theme was “Pretend you are an animal. Tell humans what they should do to help your species and to make this world more humane for all animals.”

Nassau County has co-sponsored the event with the Humane Society of New York as part of “Be Kind to Animals Week” for the past 9 years.

“I would like to congratulate all of our student essay winners. Their thoughts of protection, healing and caring for animals are truly inspiring,” Mangano said at the ceremony at the on May 11.
