Winthrop Hopes Campaign Will Spur Blood Donations

Winthrop is hosting two blood drives in the hopes of increasing donations.

As all the holiday festivities have died down, the nation really begins to refocus on its health again. With each month of the year focusing on a different cause – from October being Women’s Breast Health month to November being Alzheimer’s Awareness, each has a special focus. February is no different, being National Blood Donor Month.

Around the nation, thousands of facilities will be taking blood from willing participants, in an effort to increase hospitals’ supply of blood on-hand, since many report struggling to be able to provide enough blood to patients in need.

“Donating blood is one of the most important things that we can do to help others in need, and we hope that the community will join in its ongoing efforts to support the New York Blood Center,” Winthrop President and CEO John F. Collins said.

While there is no shortage of patients in need for transfusions, there is usually a shortage of donors willing to give blood.

In response, Winthrop is preparing to host two blood drives in early March after embarking on a February-long advertisement/awareness campaign. The drives will be held at both the Martin Spatz Conference Center and the Community Outreach Center and are aimed at collecting as many donations as possible.
