B'Way Newcomer Returns to North Shore

Steven Lutvak, composer and lyricist behind new B'way musical that's wowing critics, performs in Sands Point in December.

Fresh from the Broadway debut of the musical "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," Steven Lutvak (he wrote the critically acclaimed show’s music and lyrics) returns to Sands Point Preserve on Saturday, Dec. 7.

That’s when Lutvak will perform the upcoming “Not Quite Christmas Cabaret,” with a cast of Broadway performers singing favorite standards and holiday songs. In the mix will be a sampling of some of the music from “A Gentleman’s Guide,” which the New York Times called a “true tour de force that is hardly likely to be bettered on Broadway this season.”  Set in Edwardian England, the musical comedy tells the tale of Monty Navarro, who will stop at nothing, even murder and seduction, to capture his family’s fortune.

For Lutvak, who has sung some of his "Gentleman's Guides" tunes to Sands Point audiences before, the Dec. 7 performance is a homecoming of sorts.

“I'm delighted to be returning to the Sands Point Preserve,” Lutvak told Patch.

“Because of all the preparations for the last many months for the debut of “A Gentleman’s Guide for Love and Murder” on Broadway, I haven't been able to perform at all – in fact, I've barely played the piano,” he added. “So I'm very excited to return to the core of what I do: working with wonderful singers, and, particularly, in the wonderful and welcoming environment of the Preserve.”

Organizers at Friends of Sands Point Preserve are taking special pleasure in Lutvak’s Broadway debut.

"Steve consistently brings incredible talent to Castle Gould's Cabaret Series,” said Jean-Marie Posner, the organization’s executive director. “He performed songs from “Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder” at his very first concert at the Sands Point Preserve – almost three years ago.”

And they say this achievement is only the beginning.

“We were delighted to be privy to his show in its early stages, and now we take pride in Steve's Broadway triumph,” Posner noted. “We look forward to being on the inside track of his next hit."
