9/11 Documentary “Rebirth” Premier at Hofstra

Rebirth, the documentary film following the lives of five people dealing with the aftermath of the September 11 World Trade Center attacks, will premiere here June 10 at 7 p.m. at Hofstra University’s Helene Fortunoff Theater. The film uses time-lapse footage from 14 cameras positioned above Ground Zero, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for over 7 years. It captures the physical and emotional response to the most lethal attack in U.S. history, and shows how the human spirit can not only endure, but can triumph over unspeakable acts of violence and evil. Rebirth follows the lives of five people directly affected by 9/11, and shows how they not only survive, but how they rebuild and re-establish their lives. Director Jim Whitaker weaves their stories into the story of Ground Zero’s rebirth.

The screening at Hofstra will be preceded by wine and hors d’oeuvres and followed by a panel discussion led by Andrew Malekoff, Executive Director/CEO of North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center in Roslyn, which provided counseling for many children and families affected by 9/11. Panelists include Caitlin Olson and Donna Gaffney of Project Rebirth, and Judy Esposito, Assistant Director for Emergency Services at Stony Brook University’s Counseling and Psychological Services unit.

Rebirth debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last winter, and will run commercially in theaters nationwide beginning in August. The documentary will air on Showtime on September 11.
