Nassau Community College Presents 'Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde'

The Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde from November 4 through November 7 and November 11 through November 14. Performances begin at 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Written by Moises Kaufman, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde chronicles the artist's incendiary real-world trial for "gross indecency" that captured the attention of Victorian society. Wilde, considered the greatest playwright and humorist of 19th-century London, faced three court trials stemming from a relationship with the handsome and much younger Lord Alfred Douglas, which led to his being charged with criminal acts of homosexuality. Ultimately, Wilde is convicted of and imprisoned for "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons." Drawing from real-life trial transcripts and Wilde's words, the play looks at the eternal battle between art and morality while emphasizing the way that the powers-that-be try to exercise control over people's private lives.
