Bites Nearby: Café Formaggio

Traditional and new Italian food in Carle Place.

Traditional doesn’t have to mean mean stuffy. Even though Café Formaggio serves traditional Italian food, this is a stylish and comfortable restaurant on Old Country Road in Carle Place with ceramic floors and tiles, a marble bar, brick walls and windowed walls on two sides in the larger of the two dining areas.

Café Formaggio – popular dishes are gamberoni risotto (grilled marinated basil shrimp over a vegetable risotto), short ribs, veal osso buco, lobster fra diablo and cedar plank salmon. The restaurant offers pasta dishes, flat breads, wraps and paninis and thin crust pizzas from their brick oven.

One in four customers comes in for their gluten free menu, which is one of the most extensive on Long Island. There’s a long list of Italian favorites, such as fried calamari, penne alla vodka and chicken or veal Sorrentino, all gluten-free.
