Bites Nearby: La Casa Latina

Vibrant Latin American cuisine offered up in Westbury.

In Westbury, Executive Chef Roberto Herrera likes to showcase the best of Latin cuisine at La Casa Latina. He prepares meals from his native El Salvador, showcasing dishes from his homeland, Honduras, Colombia, Argentina and Peru as well as numerous Mediterranean specialties.

La Casa Latina – Bandeja Tipica Salvadorcia offers tender grilled steak, cassava, fried pork rind, rice, beans and avocado; Parrillada Argentina is grilled skirt steak, chicken and three sausage varieties. You can be sure that a steak ordered at La Casa Latina will be cooked properly – Herrera is the executive chef at Bryant and Cooper Steak House where he has worked for 18 years.

Pan seared whole red snapper, resting on a bed of rice, beans, stewed grape tomatoes, introduces two delicious Central American flowers to a palate —izote (the national flower of El Salvador) and loroco. Salmon was made with sauted pacaya, a date palm flower.

Starters for the meal include clams oreganata and shrimp salad with cucumber, green beans, roasted peppers, tomatoes and onions, topped with crispy bacon.

The shrimp ceviche (shrimps marinated in lime and mixed with red onions, tomatoes and cilantro) was piquant and perfect eaten bruschetta-like on the toasted rustic bread that is served with the meal.
