Long Island Black Friday Shopping Guide

What you need to know before you head out bargain hunting.

You love it or hate it, but either way, it's fast approaching: Black Friday. 

It's routinely the biggest shopping day of the year and as usual, it falls on the day after Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 29 this year. 

In what has become the norm, many big box retailers will be open on Thanksgiving. Critics have charged that Thanksgiving should be a day for store employees to spend with the families and not behind a cash register.

With few exceptions though–Costco, BJ's and Nordstrom will be closed on Thanksgiving–the big name retailers will be trying to get shoppers in the door soon after the last drop of stuffing is gone.  

Here's a look at when stores are opening and some of the doorbuster deals being advertised (click the links to visit a particular store's Black Friday ad): 

Walmart

  • Open on Thanksgiving with Black Friday deals beginning at 6 p.m. 
  • Deals are staggered to begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday.
  • Advertised deals include a 16 GB Wi-Fi enabled iPad mini for $299 with purchasers receiving a $100 Walmart gift card, a 60-inch Vizio flat panel TV for $688 and HP Pavilion TouchSmart laptops for $278.  
Target
  • Opening at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and staying open through the night; will close at 11 p.m. Friday. 
  • Doorbusters include a Nikon L320 camera for $99, an Element 50-inch LED TV for $229 and a Nintendo 3DS game system for $149.99.  
Kmart
  • Open at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving through 11 p.m. Black Friday. 
  • The store is advertising "Triple Doorbusters," with sales beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday, 7 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday.  
  • Sales include 40 percent off all audio speakers, a RCA 46-inch LED TV for $399.99 and several small appliances for $29.99. 
Best Buy
  • Opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving and staying open through the night; will close at 10 p.m. Friday. 
  • Three waves of doorbusters with tickets being handed out up to two hours before the store opens.
  • Sales include an Apple iPad 2 with Wi-Fi-16 GB for $299, a Samsung 65-inch LED TV for $999.99 and an Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-16 GB for $99. 
Kohl's 
  • Opening at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and staying open through the night; will close at midnight Friday. 
  • Deals include 50 percent off all toys from numerous brands, including Fisher Price, Little Tykes, Barbie, Disney Princess and Playskool. 
  • In addition to sale items, shoppers earn $15 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 spent Nov. 26 through Dec. 1. 
JCPenney
  • Opening at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving and will be open until 9 p.m. Friday. 
  • Deals include $19.99 women's boots, $79 diamond studs and $9.99 kitchen electronics.
Macy's
  • Opening at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving and will be open until 10 p.m. Friday. 
  • Sales include a Keurig coffee maker for $99.99, numerous small appliances with $10 rebates and 60 percent off all Calvin Klein designer coats. 
Sears
  • Opening at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving and will be open until 10 p.m. Friday. 
  • Deals include a a 32-inch RCA LCD TV for $180, a 42-inch RCA LED LCD TV for $300, a Kindle Fire HD for $140 and a Dell 15.6-inch Inspiron notebook for $300. 
Toys R Us
  • Opening at 5 p.m. Thanksgiving with most stores staying open until 11 p.m. Friday. 
  • Sales include a Skylanders Swap Force Starter Pack for $37.49, a Furby Boom for $29.99 and a Leapfrog LeapPad 2 Explorer for $39.99.
