NY State Clothing Sales Tax Ends April 1

Consumers will be not be charged state sales tax on purchases under $55.

New York State is making it easier for shoppers to pick up that new dress, shirt or pair of shoes you’ve been looking at in the stores.

A exemption on state sales tax will run from April 1, 2011 until March 31, 2012. The exemption applies to sales of clothing and footwear costing less than $55 per item or pair.

The exemption will be extended to purchases of less than $110 for those items next year.

The state had repealing the sales tax holiday on clothing costing less than $110 .

“This will be an enormous boost for our local retailers,” , R-Mineola, said. “It will hopefully spur economic growth. At the same time, it gives our consumers a break when they go shopping for clothing or shoes.  Every little bit helps.”

The tax exemption was originally implemented in 2006 to stop New Yorkers from traveling to New Jersey to shop since the Garden State does not have such a tax.

“With many hard-working Long Island families already struggling to make ends meet, having to pay an additional tax on clothing and footwear for your children should not be an additional worry,” , R-East Meadow, said. “The sales-tax exemption on clothing and footwear under $55 is a long overdue exemption as well as a relief to taxpayers across Long Island.”

The exemption's repeal was one of former ’s, proposals included in the 2010-11 fiscal budget to help close a $9.2 billion deficit, and was expected to generate an estimated $540 million.
