Social Security Disability a Topic at Mineola Kiwanis

Following their successful annual , the Mineola County Seat Kiwanis hosted guest speaker Daniel Morrin, a , at their Monday-morning meeting at the Williston Park IHOP.

Morrin spoke to the group about Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits and the evaluation process to determine who receives benefits.

In order to qualify for SSDI, persons must have worked and paid into the program through their mandatory payroll taxes for five of the last 10 years.

The claimant must also have become disabled before reaching their full retirement age of 65-67 and meet social security’s definition of “disabled,” using the Social Security Administration’s process known as sequential evaluation – a five-step process – which determines who receives benefits.

One of the factors for disqualification is earning more than $1,000 a month as an employee if they are determined to be “working or engaged in a substantial gainful activity.”
