Spinach Pie and Greek Salad

A tasty and filling meal from Souvlaki Stop in Mineola.

Although the place is called , it is the homemade spinach pie that is the best seller, rather than the skewered Greek meat dish, say owners Maria and Ted Pontikis.

This Dish: Spinach Pie and Greek Salad

What’s Inside: a mixture of feta cheese and spinach is wrapped in phyllo dough and baked. The Greek salad is made with lettuce, cucumber, tomato spicy peppers, olives, crumbled feta cheese and domades (grape leaves stuffed with a flavored rice mixture).

How’s It Taste: The crispy, flaky phyllo dough is a perfect foil to the creamy feta and there is lots of spinach. While the salad is a typical Greek salad in terms of the ingredients (grilled chicken chunks on top add another protein), the vinaigrette dressing is anything but typical. It is earthy and herb-filled; Maria Pontikis says customers come in and buy it by the pint.

Sides: This is a hearty meal that just needs a beverage of choice.
