Sun Finally Shines on Third Annual Mineola Street Fair

After last week's rain out, hundreds gather downtown for street fair's new location.

Mineola President Ray Sikorski awoke Sunday morning around 4 a.m. to the pitter-patter of rain drops on his outside awning.

Unwelcome news considering that the  rain date was scheduled after last week’s original date was , meaning that there was no more wiggle room if yesterday’s event was rained out.

Fortunately, the light rain gave way to sunny skies, and the third annual Mineola Street Fair not only went on but flourished.

The street fair included more than 20 sponsors and dozens of village businesses who set up tables and booths along Mineola Boulevard, Second Street and Main Street.

“I can’t believe the turnout,” said Lisa Conte, business manager at . October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and her health group was talking to visitors and handing out information to help educate people about the disease. “We’re just trying to raise people’s awareness, to let them know there is help for them, whether it is mammograms or shelf-check tests,” she said.

Down the block, was busy providing patrons with a taste of their fine wines.

“We want to build awareness and let people know they don’t have to travel too far for good wines at great prices,” manager Peter Meta said. “This event is great marketing for us.”

Meta said last week’s rainout didn’t really impact traffic; in fact, sales rep Julie Valgoi said business couldn’t be much better.

“We have been here since 1 p.m., and have seen a lot of customers,” she said.

The sunny skies brought out scores of residents who frequented the vendor stands and enjoyed the musical groups in addition to the Marching Band, which performed its routine in front of hundreds lined along Mineola Boulevard.

“Welcome to Mineola, enjoy our great village,” said during his opening remarks, praising the sponsors and many volunteers who made Sunday’s fair a success.

“This day turned out beautifully,” Sikorski said.
