Voting Closed for Second Annual Mineola Movie Night in the Park

Voters pick "Despicable Me" as film to see on July 19 at Wilson Park.

The Minions will be invading Mineola.

The Mineola Chamber of Commerce will be showing the original “Despicable Me” movie during its second annual “Movie Night in the Park” this year at Wilson Field after voting closed Tuesday afternoon.

The movie night is set for July 19 with a rain date of July 20 and is free to attend for Mineola residents. The movie will begin at sundown.

The film was one of three choices which included recent animated movies “Wreck-it Ralph” or the classic 80’s movie “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” The CGI-animated film starring Steve Carell as Gru, the Russian-accented villian-turned father of three adopted girls, has a sequel currently in theaters and which most likely helped lead to it being the choice of the night.

There were a total of 85 votes cast on the Mineola Chamber website, with Despicable Me garnering 51 percent of the vote. “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” came in second with 29 percent, while only 20 percent favored “Wreck-it Ralph.”

Last year the chamber showed the animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book “The Lorax” starring Danny DeVito.

The chamber is attempting to get several local fitness centers and gyms to come and do demonstrations, which Greene said would consist of “stretchy things” and to help promote their businesses. The Mineola Junior Fire Department will also be selling food for donations for their organization.
