Voting Open for Second Mineola Movie Night in the Park

Choices include "Despicable Me," "Wreck-It Ralph" and "E.T."

The Mineola Chamber of Commerce is asking residents to vote on what movie they will be showing for their second annual “Movie Night in the Park” this year at Wilson Field.

The newly revamped chamber website, which went live earlier this month, has a page dedicated to voting on which family-friendly movie residents want shown out under the stars: recent animated movies “Wreck-it Ralph”, “Despicable Me” or the classic 80’s movie “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.”

As of Thursday morning, only 14 votes had been entered, with “Despicable Me” starring Steve Carell as Gru, the Russian-accented villian-turned father of three adopted girls, leading the way with 57 percent of the vote. A sequel to the Dreamworks animated comedy is due out in theaters in July.

“Wreck-it Ralph,” a Disney movie which has “Donkey Kong” inspired origins about a video game bad-guy played by John C. Reilly who wants to turn good, is tied with “E.T.,” the classic Steven Spielberg masterpiece about an alien trying to “phone home” in second place with 21 percent each.

The movie night is set for July 19 with a rain date of July 20 and is free to attend for Mineola residents.

Mineola Chamber President Bill Greene said that he does not have a firm date at which voting will close, guessing around July 7-8, only saying that he needs ample time to order the movie from distributors and gain permissions for an outdoor showing.

“I need about 10 days lead time, which would lead me to about the ninth,” he said Wednesday, noting that the cost would be over $1,500, but is being done as a way to promote the businesses in the village.

“Hopefully the sponsorships will cover it,” he said.

Last year the chamber showed the animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book “The Lorax” starring Danny DeVito.

The chamber is attempting to get several local fitness centers and gyms to come and do demonstrations, which Greene said would consist of “stretchy things” and to help promote their businesses. The Mineola Junior Fire Department was also being sent an invitation to sell food for donations for their organization.
