Where’s the Fair?

Mineola street fair cancelled on account of rain.

Mineola residents found themselves walking around the downtown area with a puzzled look on their faces Sunday.

The  was supposed to have been held in the . There was a tent set up across the street from  for guests. Despite vehicles lining the street, there was no “Festival of Cars” as had been advertised.

One father with his two children in tow was seen checking his smartphone looking for any information about the fair. Maybe they got the times wrong? Had they read Sunday instead of Saturday? Slowly word spread from the businesses on Main Street to the pedestrians that the fair was canceled. Why? “Rain,” one woman working behind the counter at  signed to residents through the storefront glass.

Late Saturday night an e-mail was reportedly sent out by the  stating that the fair had been canceled on account of the inclement forecast. The only problem was that the rain never came.

According to the flier for the fair, the rain date is October 2, but many business leaders fear that the damage has been done. Numerous amounts of money were spent promoting the fair and  at . It is not known how much money village businesses may have lost in the cancellation of the fair.

“Unfortunately the weather didn’t turn out the way it is today,” owner and chamber member Steve Ford said late Sunday afternoon. “We had to make the call and that was it.”

Ford added that chamber members would be spnding the next four or five days contacting business owners  “to let them know it’s still on for next week.”

I was on my way walking to Western Beef around 1:30p or so and decided to keep on towards Main St. for the fair and was puzzled as I didn't hear about a cancellation. I asked a few folks on 2nd street about the fair and not a soul knew what I was talking about. I almost made it to Mineola Blvd when I turned around when it was evident that the fair wasn't taking place. It's a shame.

i was roaming around in car and then walking for about 45 mins.just because my 6 yrs old daughter was too excited about this fair ,there was no one on the streets BTW today i came to know about all the streets in and around mineola blvd.,anyways after my husband checked on web ,he informed us that it has been called off for today and suppose to take place next sunday, when i infromed my daughter her expression was very unsure, she was much disappointed because the reason i was giving was rain and we were literally sweating as the temp. was around 77deg.why can't any such news be put on headlines atleast to the residents?

The cancellation was on channel 18 early last evening, so anyone who happened to tune in, would have known in plenty of time.

I watch Channel 18 about as much as I watch Cablevision's News 12 Long Island. The Williston Park Street Fair was great and a big money maker.
