Volunteer in Moore, Okla.: '6 Months Ago, This Was Us'

It is a familiar feeling that many of us get when we see hurt and destruction happening to those around us, the need to help, to do something. When disaster struck in Oklahoma, one Smithtown resident was on the ground just a short time later, with outstretched hand to those in need.  Craig Cooper, a freelance video and event producer from Smithtown, is also a volunteer with the American Red Cross. For Cooper, Hurricane Katrina was his call to action.

Lakeview Resident to Return Nassau Award

Lakeview native Cay Fatima has announced she will be returning the “Trailblazer Award” given to her by the Nassau County Legislature on March 18 after learning that the county allegedly planned to rename her Environmental Bond Act Program project. Fatima’s project called for a garden to be named Roderick Cockerham Botanical Peace Garden. Cockerham was a Lakeview teenager who was shot and killed by his neighbor in 1989. However, Fatima claims that the county executive’s office has hijacked her Environmental Bond Act Project by orchestrating a ribbon cutting ceremony for a “Lakeview Peace Garden” scheduled for May 28.
