Winthrop Partners with the COPD Foundation to Educate the Community on Lung Disease and Provide Free Lung Tests
Mineola, NY –There are 12 million people in the United States who are developing or living undiagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – a term that describes several progressive lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma, and emphysema. Could you be one of them? Symptoms of COPD are often mistaken for a normal part of aging and include shortness of breath, coughing and fatigue.

Winthrop-University Hospital invites you learn more about COPD and assess your own risk on Thursday, May 3. The Hospital will host the COPD Foundation’s COPD Shuttle: Journey to the Center of the Lung – a 20-seat, state-of-the-art mobile motion simulator designed to make viewers feel as if they are inside the body, offering a rare glimpse into the lungs and heightening their understanding of COPD. The shuttle will be located in the parking lot behind the Winthrop Wellness Pavilion at 1300 Franklin Avenue in Garden City from 11AM to 6PM.
Winthrop-University Hospital will also provide free lung tests that will screen for COPD. A lung specialist will be on hand to answer questions about lung disease, and a sleep disorders specialist will provide education and give tours of Winthrop’s Sleep Disorders Lab. Education about tobacco cessation, asthma and pulmonary hypertension be provided throughout the day.
