This year’s Jack’s Run/Walk for Autism Awareness is Saturday at 9 a.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington.

The 5K run/walk is named for Jack, the nephew of Michael and Ondine Stone Miranda, the founding partners of Mineola-based law firm Miranda Sambursky Slone Sklarin Verveniotis, a race sponsor.

"This event benefits autism services and schools at the local level-which badly need our help as state aid dwindles," Michael Miranda said.

"We also raise awareness as 1 in 50 of our children are diagnosed with autism. Seven years ago, when we started this event, it was 1 in 185," Miranda pointed out. "That keeps us motivated to keep raising money and awareness."

Every dollar raised goes to Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism, or NSSA, Miranda said. NSSA services several school districts on Long Island and operates the Martin C. Barell School, which Jack attends

It’s the seventh year for Jack's Run/Walk will feature raffles – including one for a 42-inch flat-screen television – as well refreshments, and t-shirts for all entrants. Pledge forms will be available for those who cannot attend, but want to support NSSA.
