Mineola Garden Art Studio students featuring vintage records as part of annual art show.

The Garden Art Studio in Mineola is featuring over 50 vintage record albums – or "disks" as the children like to call them – as part of their annual art show on display at the Walter and Joan Hobbs Art Gallery in the Mineola Library until June 30.

"Each artist had to make a decision as to what to do with the paper label and the hole in the center. It was a great challenge for students’ ages 6 to 17 years old," art director and teacher Lisa Fazio Cotroneo said in a release. "I like all my students to complete one common project to show that artists at any age can get wonderful results using the same materials."

On June 10 the studio’s art reception was held with over 100 guests who attended despite the rain. Works in charcoal, pen and ink, oil, watercolor, collage and even scratchboard, were included in the show. The display case also contained small handcrafted easels and even a painted pair of sneakers. A unique group project assigned student to bring in a pair of sneakers to paint, when completed were worn to the show as “art to wear.”

The event included an award ceremony where students are acknowledged for their dedication to the arts with medals, plaques and trophies. The young artists had the ability to lecture to the group as to what their methods and reasoning were behind their artwork.

Nicole Blach a freshman at C.W.Post on a full art scholarship and a past student of the studio, was a special guest speaker.

"When I first started with the Garden Art Studio 12 years ago I was very shy" Blach said. “And now that I'm in college I have used the skills that I learned in the studio to help me with my classes today. I was able to build my confidence and portfolio in the studio which helped me earn my full art scholarship. I am grateful to the studio for my success."

Also on display is Miss Lisa's artwork and award-winning illustration of Clark Gardens in Albertson and an awarded watercolor of Denali Park on a recent trip to Alaska.
