Winthrop Hosts Healthcare Career Fair for 200-Plus Students

High school students given chance to explore future in healthcare.

More than 200 students from various local high schools visited ’s Community Outreach Center on March 16 to participate in a Healthcare Career Fair.

The initiative was designed to introduce students to careers in healthcare, as well as to provide them with information about healthy living.

Students from Baldwin High School, , , Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead and Westbury High School had an opportunity to visit display tables where staff from more than 20 hospital departments including nursing, respiratory therapy, pathology, clinical informatics, orthopedics, human resources and marketing and public relations, among others.

Students spoke with hospital employees about specific job responsibilities and the various career opportunities in the healthcare field as well as the educational requirements.

Winthrop has also partnered with the Mineola School District in a unique science lab .

In addition, representatives from “A Step Ahead Prosthetics” were on site to provide educational information to students about the growing field of prosthetics and orthotics. Demonstrations were also shown of casting for broken limbs.

“(We were) pleased to host such a successful event for high school students,” Winthrop Director of Grants and Special Programs Diane Bachor said in a statement. “and we look forward to future events that will provide even more students with the same opportunity to learn about the vast career choices in the healthcare field.”
