Donald Petrie, Chaminade Alum, 90

WW II veteran from Great Neck passed away on August 30.

Donald Petrie passed away at his home in Great Neck the age of 90 from medical problems relating to a 2008 stroke on August 30.

Petrie was raised in Forrest Hills, Queens and was a graduate of before enlisting in the armed services after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 as a member of the Army Air Corps. He was first assigned as a bomber navigator in Italy and left the service with the rank of captain.

In 1949, Petrie married Jane Adams, living in her familial home in Great Neck. During his career, Petrie worked for the Otis Elevator Company, Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., and was executive vice president of the United States Trust Co. of New York before becomming vice president at Marine Midland Bank, until his retirement in the 1980s.

Petrie also contributed non-profit work as president of the Webster Apartments, a position he held for 35 years, offering affordable housing to single women.

He is survived by his wife, son Douglas Jr. of Los Angeles, son Scott Petrie of Radnor, PA; daughters Anne Petrie of Lexington, Ohio, Elizabeth Devoll of Westport, CT, and Susan Petrie-Badertscher of Manhattan; and four granddaughters and four grandsons.

A funeral service was held Saturday at  in Great Neck and interred at All Saints Cemetery.
