Former Sewanhaka scholar-athlete Fred John Laux passed away on August 16 at the age of 77.
Born in 1935 in Mineola, Laux grew up in Franklin Square as the son of Otto and Elinor Laux. He graduated from where he was awarded the Scholar-Athlete Award and received a Bachelor of Science in economics from Yale University. He then spent his career at Phillip Morris, retiring in 1995 as executive vice president of human resources.
During his retirement, Laux spent time in both Jonathan’s Landing in Jupiter, Florida and Saddle River, New Jersey, where he was a longtime member of Ridgewood Country Club. He was a parishioner of St. Gabriel’s Church in Saddle River for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, JoAnn Rogers Laux; children, George Laux, Peter Laux, Cindy Laux, Cheryl Smith, Jacqueline Laux and Jeannine Laux; grandchildren, Timothy Laux, Sally Laux, Angie Laux, Charlie Smith and Olivia Smith.
A wake was held at the in Ridgewood.
