Howard G. Henkel, 84, Mineola Assistant Postmaster

Former Mineola resident passed away on Feb. 13, 2013.

Howard G. Henkl of Seminole, Florida, passed away Feb. 13, 2013 at Hospice House Woodside in Pinellas Park, FL at the age of 84.

He was born May 22, 1928 in Mineola, New York, the son of Howard and Alberta “LaGault” Henkel.

Henkl retired as Assistant Postmaster from the United States Postal Service in Mineola, Long Island New York. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII and was awarded the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and American Theatre Medal. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Seminole. He was an avid golfer and recorded no less than 5 Holes In One, an N.R.A. instructor, and enjoyed boating, hunting, and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith; son, Howard G., Jr. and his wife, Kimberly; sisters Dolores Newell and her husband, James, and Rita Gordon; grandchildren Katie Ann Henkel and Glenn Wicks, and several nieces and nephews.

A wake was held Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 at the funeral home, with funeral services and Deacon Richard Brady, officiating.
