Lawrence Baldwin, Civil Engineer, 81

Former U.S. Navy Lieutenant passed away on August 27.

S. Lawrence (Larry) Baldwin passed on away August 27 at the age of 81.

Born on Sept. 8, 1930 in Mineola to Marvin C. and Frances (Lawrence) Baldwin, Larry graduated from Westbury High School and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, enrolling in the ROTC program and earning his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

Upon graduation he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and later became employed by New York City Department of Water Supply at Ashokan Reservoir in Olive Bridge, NY. In August 1962 Larry became the City Engineer for Oneonta, moving to Gilbertsville in May 1963. He was later a partner with Leon Kalmus and established Baldwin and Kalmus Associates. He also was self-employed as a consulting engineer on several major projects in the area including the original Boys’ Club in Oneonta. In 1970 he went to work for the New York State Department of Health as Senior Sanitarian in Oneonta until his retirement in 1988.

An avid hunter, trapper, fisherman, and horseman, Baldwin married Dolores (Cook) Baldwin Feb. 20, 1982, who survives him as well as sister Ann (Bill) Edgar of Southampton, NY; brother G. Hewlett (Cathy) Baldwin of Ruxton, Maryland and his children Dale Cook of Cortland, NY; Dennis (Lori) Cook of Yuma, AZ; Sue Steen of Mannsville, NY; Trudy (Bill) Claudy of Hartwick, NY; Sherry (Bob) Hall of Gilbertsville, NY; Kelly (Michael) Butler of Oneonta, NY; Carol (Randy) Neale of Masonville, NY; and Kathy (Bob) Miller of Wellington, FL. Larry is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass was celebrated on August 31 at St. Mary’s Church in Oneonta. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.
