Thomas J. Backel, Ex-Long Island Motor Service Owner, 60

Former owner of Jericho Turnpike car shop passes away on July 20.

Thomas J. Backel of Baiting Hollow died July 20, 2012 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 60 years old.

Backel was born Feb. 23, 1952 to Stanley and Helen Backel in Mineola. He was the former owner of Long Island Motor Service at 120 Jericho Turnpike in Mineola. His hobbies included fishing and hunting. He loved to spend his time outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his children, Steven, Edward and Angela, his parents, his brothers, Michael, Robert and Richard, and his sisters, Marion Cisterino and Susan Migliaccio.

The family will receive visitors Monday and Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m., officiated by Father Robert Kuznik. Private cremation will follow.
