Letter to the Editor: Enough is Enough

Mineola PTA representatives submitted the following letter.

Board of Education Trustees traditionally work in harmony with our PTAs. This week our beloved Co-Presidents were threatened with legal action by Board of Education .

Having said at Meet the Candidates Night that our student’s advancement suffered from the lawsuits of recent years, trustee McGrath then threatened legal action against our PTA District Council Co-Presidents. The cause? He doesn’t like PTA members' avatars; a picture showing their choice.

PTA is a national organization, not an object for micromanagement by any board of education trustee. Mr. McGrath chose to use his position as an attorney to threaten them with legal action. An action, in our view, that would be an attempt to strip them of their constitutional right to free speech and expression.

How much longer will the voters of our district allow Mr. McGrath to block our voices and stand in the way of educational progress and fiscal responsibility?

Please make your opinion known by voting, May 15, 2012.

Respectfully,

This is all starting to look rather childish.

SCPLJ - With all due respect, being on the receiving end of the legal threat, it does not feel childish to us. Respectfully, Nicole Matzer & Cindy Velez CoPresidents Mineola District Council of PTA's

Nicole-You may be right. However, bringing this up in a letter to the Patch, seems to be just adding another layer to the ongoing fight between various board members.

Once again I am offended by statements made by Mr. McGrath. First he insults the District, then our High School students and staff and now he is going after our PTA volunteers. I think that about covers it all. Why then, I need to ask, does he even want to be part of our Mineola BOE? I too agree that Mr. McGrath's threats of legal action are over the top. Hasn't this District paid enough legal fees for frivolous actions? I hope we don't be hearing from him after the new Board is sworn in after next week's election. Patti Purdy Past President, District Council PTA P.S. to SCPLJ: Why do you hide behind initials?
SLJ May 07, 2012 at 08:04 PM
Patti-Why is my use of "initials" a concern for you?
Patti Purdy May 07, 2012 at 08:14 PM
not a "concern"...i just wonder who is hiding behind those foster grants ;)

McGrath has always been an arrogant blowhard. Why should anyone be surprised by his latest nonsense? Great job JOhn. You show those hardworking volunteers in PTA who's the boss. Shame on you and shame on us for letting him get voted in all these years. Let's show him the door on May 15th.

You're hilarious SCPLJ/McGrath. First try to bully the victims. Than when the victims let the world know, you try to have them think that it's not ok to notify people of bullying. Nice piece of ... "work", McGrath.

Cypher-No connection what so ever.

As much as I hate to give Mr. McGrath the publicity he was looking for when he started this, since I am the "she" and the "her" that he refers to in his Face book posts, I have no choice. I in no way intended for my profile picture (Avatar) to be perceived as campaigning on the DC page, and in my opinion, out of lack of support for himself, he is the only one who saw it that way. As a member of Jackson Ave., SEPTA & Mineola Middle School's PTA, Willis Ave. PTO, and slated for a VP spot on the HS Executive Board next year, I am well aware of the "rules" and have been contributing positive, pertinent information to the DC page since it's inception. It appears to me that it was HE who was using the DC forum to campaign by getting his name out there, after all, negative attention is attention just the same. When you have nothing positive to contribute, you cry FOUL on someone else. He cried, I complied...Case Closed
