Update: Nassau Detective Killed in Crash

Detective Alfred A. Samaniego's car collided with tractor trailer near Northern State, cops said.

Police have confirmed that Nassau County Detective Alfred A. Samaniego was killed Wednesday morning after his car collided with a tractor trailer on Glen Cove Road.

Samaniego was driving west on the Glen Cove Road exit ramp of the Northern State Parkway when he reportedly crossed over the northbound lanes, according to Nassau County Police. His 2011 GMC Acadia Denali collided with a US Mail tractor trailer truck that was southbound on Glen Cove Road, police reported.

The collision happened at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday, detectives said.

Samaniego was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nassau County Ambulance Medical Technician and was transported to the county morgue, detectives reported. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, cops said.

"He was a highly motivated, hard working, and skilled detective who was assigned to the prestigious Special Investigations Squad," Glenn Ciccone, president of the Nassau County Police Department Detectives Association, stated, according to Newsday. "His impeccable character exemplified his constant professionalism in policing as well as in his union activities. His dedication to his fellow members and to the residents of Nassau County was unparalleled."
