A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Williston Park

A fire occurred in an apartment at 590 Willis Ave. on January 9 at 1:36 p.m.

A car accident occurred at Denton Avenue and Jasmine Avenue on January 12 at 9:56 a.m.

New Hyde Park

Police were on the lookout for a male perpetrator on Jericho Turnpike described as 25-30 years old and 200 lbs wanted for a sexual assault in New Hyde Park on January 10 at 6:07 p.m.

Roslyn Heights

Police are investigating a criminal mischief incident that occurred between Friday Jan. 4, 2013 and Monday Jan. 7, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. in Roslyn Heights. According to detectives, graffiti was discovered on a playground slide at Heights Elementary School on Willow Street. The graffiti included a (1”-2”) one to two inch Swastika along with obscene words and pictures written with a black magic marker. The graffiti is being investigated as a Bias Incident and the investigation is ongoing. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the above crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Roslyn

An overturned car was reported at 100 Port Washington Blvd. on January 5 at 10:30 p.m. There was no entrapment reported. Port Washington Fire Department and Roslyn Rescue personnel responded to the scene.

An arrest for assault occurred in Roslyn on January 10 at 7:10 p.m. According to detectives, an off duty Nassau County Police Officer observed the defendant Mark Trinkler, 32, of East Elmhurst exit the CVS Pharmacy located at 373 Willis Ave. with merchandise without paying for it. Outside the store the officer assisted the CVS store manager and attempted to place the defendant under arrest. The defendant refused all commands and fought with the officer causing him to fall and injure his right hand and left knee. Another off duty New York City Police Officer assisted with holding the defendant until additional units arrived to place Trinkler in custody. The Nassau Police Officer was treated and released for his injuries at a nearby hospital. During a search incident to arrest the defendant was found to be in possession of three prescriptions that were fraudulent. Trinkler is being charged with second degree assault, three counts of second degree possession of a forged instrument and petit larceny. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on January 11.

Westbury

A car fire occurred at the interchange of the Wantagh Parkway and the eastbound Northern State Parkway on January 6 at 6:19 p.m.

A car accident occurred at Merrick Avenue and Old Country Road on January 10 at 7:21 p.m. The Westbury Fire Department responded to the scene.

Carle Place

A serious vehicular accident was reported in Carle Place on January 5 at 11:54 a.m. According to detectives, a 76 year old female was operating a 2005 Chevrolet northbound on Park Avenue approaching Raff Avenue. Two male victims, ages 54 and 55 were standing behind a 2001 Ford that was parked in the roadway. The driver of the Chevrolet suffered a medical episode and the vehicle struck the parked car and the 55 year old. After the collision the 54 year old was struck by the parked auto. The 55 year old was removed to a local hospital where he was admitted and is listed in critical condition. The 54 year old refused medical assistance at the scene. The 76 year old driver was also transported to a local hospital and treated for non life threatening injuries. The Chevrolet was impounded for brake and safety checks. Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

A Missouri man was arrested in Carle Place on January 8 at 8:39 a.m. for failing to possess a gun permit. According to detectives, employees of the Holiday Inn at 369 Old Country Road found a bag containing two handguns in the dining room of the hotel. Third Precinct police officers responded and after an investigation determined the weapons belonged to Justin Marco, 40 of Cameron. The defendant did not have a permit to possess the .40 caliber and .380 caliber handguns. The defendant was taken into custody and no injuries were reported. Marco was charged with two counts of second degree criminal possession of a weapon and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on January 9. 

Hicksville

An armed robbery occurred on January 7 at 6:57 p.m. in the vicinity of West John Street. Reportedly two male Hispanics followed the victim home and displayed a black revolver before fleeing east on West John Street in an older Toyota Carolla. 

Woodbury

A gas leak was reported at Jericho Turnpike and Woodbury Road at a shopping center on January 8 at 3:35 p.m. The gas company was requested to the scene.

Floral Park

Eight individuals were arrested for a burglary that occurred on January 7 at 2 p.m. in Floral Park. According to detectives the following individuals broke into a vacant residence located on Arthur Avenue through a locked back door: Jerome Allen, 26, of St Albans; Brett Schlesinger, 25, of Astoria; Keith Lee, 25, of Floral Park; Richard Fievre, 25, of Elmont;  Ashley Evans, 25, of Jamaica; Owen Cook, 30, of Brooklyn; Tristan Thompson, 23, of South Floral Park; Jaskarm Kang, 22, of Flushing. Once inside the home the defendants spray painted the interior walls causing extensive damage. Schlesinger is charged with second degree criminal trespass and was arraigned at First District Court, Hempstead on January 23. All other defendants are charged with second degree burglary. Allen is additionally charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. The remaining seven defendants were arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on January 8.

A car overturned at Jericho Turnpike and North Tyson Avenue on January 10 at 8:55 a.m.

East Garden City

A pedestrian was struck on Hempstead Turnpike and California Avenue at Hofstra University in the vicinity of the underpass on January 10 at 1:12 p.m.

Garden City

A Garden City Park female states that she was stopped at a red light on Nassau Boulevard at South Avenue on January 5 when an unidentified male walked up to the vehicle and punched out the rear side window.

As part of an ongoing investigation, Garden City detectives arrested a male 19-year-old from Brooklyn on January 8 for acting in consort with two others previously arrested for cashing forged checks totaling more than $6,800 in November 2012 at a Citibank on Franklin Avenue. The other two subjects, a female 45-year-old and a female 22-year-old, both from Hempstead, were arrested on Nov. 27, 2012.

A Garden City South teen is accused of making a terroristic threat inside his classroom at the Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh Wednesday, according to Nassau County Fifth Squad detectives. 

West Hempstead

A West Hempstead man who was driving a stolen vehicle took a Long Beach police officer on a chase before he collided into his patrol car and was arrested.

One week after the arrest of two employees on unauthorized practice and prostitution charges, Nassau County Police have arrested two more employees of Royal Day Spa in West Hempstead on similar charges.

A West Hempstead woman awoke Thursday morning to discover that her home had been burglarized while she was sleeping. Nassau County Police's Fourth Squad is investigating the occupied burglary that occurred sometime between 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 and 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 10 inside a home on Jackson Avenue.
